Sir George Clausen RA (1852 - 1944)
RA Collection: Art
A full-length study of a man wearing a hat and gaiters bending forwards with his hands in a position that suggests he is holding a scythe. The pole handle of the scythe is lightly sketched in.
This is probably a working drawing from around the time that Clausen was preparing his major canvas The Mowers (1891; Usher Gallery, Lincoln). However, the gaiters worn by the figure may indicate that it relates to an earlier watercolour painting of mowers which dates from 1885.
There is a drawing of a pair of legs on the verso of the sheet which probably relate to a life drawing.
