Sir George Clausen RA (1852 - 1944)
RA Collection: Art
This sheet incudes two detailed pencil studies from front and back of a man bending over whilst digging with a fork. There are also rough outlines of two upright figures on the same sheet. It was grouped with a number of other drawing dating from the period that Clausen spent in Childwick Green, near St Albans, between 1881-1884. The figure, wearing a shallow-brimmed hat and gaiters, is comparable with the character seen in the foreground of oil and watercolour compositions on the theme of hoeing turnips produced around this time inlclusing Hoeing Turnips (oil on canvas, 1883; private collection).
