Sir George Clausen RA (1852 - 1944)
RA Collection: Art
This drawing of a girl in profile wearing a hat with a dark band is very likely a study for the schoolgirl seen on the far right of the painting Winter Work (1883; Tate Britain). In the painting, the child carries a bag and a hoop and is viewed in profile turned towards the left, rather than to the right as in this drawing. Clausen added the figure of the girl following the poor reception of Winter Work at the Grosvenor Gallery exhibition of 1883 (no. 152). A pen and ink illustration in the Royal Academy Collection records the original composition of the painting (RA 04/531).
