According to the form lodged with the Copyright Office in 1883, the photograph was taken at 18 Hyde Park Gate, South Kensington. However Richard Redgrave had also designed a villa at 27 Hyde Park Gate on land he had acquired in 1841 and in which he lived until his death in 1888. Although Redgrave is shown holding a palette and brushes, he was almost blind by the time of the photograph.
