Portrait of Philip Sargant Florence, c. 1913

F. Ernest Jackson ARA (1872 - 1945)

RA Collection: Art

A portrait of Philip Sargant Florence (1890-1982), son of the artist Mary Sargant Florence who, like F. Ernest Jackson, was a member of the Tempera Society. She commissioned Jackson to draw her children, Philip and Alix. Philip is depicted looking out of the window and wearing his college blazer from Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge. Philip went on to become an academic, first as a lecturer in economics at Cambridge then as Professor of Commerce at Birmingham University.

There is an impression of this print in the British Museum (1914,0406.69) and another reproduced in F. Ernest Jackson and his School featuring trial touches on the upper left.
