Frederick Richard Lee RA (1798 - 1879)
RA Collection: Art
Lee depicts the River Thames at Cliveden, Berkshire. In the foreground is the Cliveden Ferry, a large punt used by farmers and tourists to cross the Thames. Fixed across the river are large bucks or baskets. These were attached to posts which allowed them to be raised and lowered, to catch eels.
Born in Devon, Lee painted landscapes throughout England, Scotland and Wales. He admired the art of John Constable, often choosing similar subjects. Lee studied in the RA Schools from 1818; he was elected Associate of the Royal Academy in 1834 and Royal Academician in 1838.
