Sir George Clausen RA, Landscape with weather study

Landscape with weather study, probably 1920s/30s

Sir George Clausen RA (1852 - 1944)

RA Collection: Art

This simple landscape consists of a house and a few trees, with three-quarters of the paper occupied by a voluminous sky, large areas of which are shaded with black crayon. The shading sustained across the landscape suggests rainy weather conditions.

Clausen began to document weather effects during the First World War and it was a preoccupation which endured throughout his work of the 1920s and 1930s.
