Sir George Clausen RA (1852 - 1944)
RA Collection: Art
A small farm surrounded by trees is seen in the foreground of this narrow strip of landscape. Two roughly-sketched objects on the horizon appear to be windmills. A flat landscape with a low horizon was a feature of the Essex countryside where Clausen spent much of his time during the early decades of the twentieth century. However, an expansive sky began to be a feature of his work from about 1914 onwards, as seen in the oil painting In the Fields in June (1914, National Museum of Wales, Cardiff).
