Richard Redgrave RA (1804 - 1888)
RA Collection: Art
A pencil drawing of a composition depicting a male figure reclining in a landscape. He holds a book in his right hand and looks towards the sky where a group of imaginary figures are gathered in front of a sunset (or full moon?). This is probably for one of Redgrave's illustrations, perhaps Milton's L'Allegro .
This drawing and another on the same album leaf (16/1352) are slightly different versions of the same composition. Both drawings are quite resolved and the orientation of the paper (landscape here and portrait in the other drawing) is the main difference between them along with the figure being beardless in this version and bearded in the other.
