From: Forum of Augustus - Temple of Mars Ultor
RA Collection: Art
The Temple of Mars Ultor (the Avenger) was dedicated by Augustus in 2 BC as the centre piece of his new Forum in Rome. The last three columns of the south side of the Temple with the corresponding section of the cella wall and roof between them still stand. This cast reproduces some of the middle moulding around a coffer in the ceiling.
The cast was part of the collection of Thomas Lawrence which went to auction on 10 May 1830 at Christie's and was acquired by the Royal Academy. Lawrence also had and the Royal Academy acquired casts of other areas of the mouldings; see 11/1102 and 11/982.
