The cast is of two seated female divinities (Figures L and M) which were made from one block of marble for the north (viewer's right) corner zone of the Parthenon's East Pediment (438-433 BC). The statue group was removed by Lord Elgin's agent in 1802 and was acquired by the British Museum (inv. 303) in 1816.
The East Pediment depicted the Birth of Athena; both of these goddesses have their backs to that scene. The reclining goddess with her exposed right shoulder is generally accepted to be Aphrodite; the other is most often identified as her mother Dione or the goddess Artemis.
