Sawrey Gilpin RA, A sleeping dog

A sleeping dog, by 1807

Sawrey Gilpin RA (1733 - 1807)

RA Collection: Art

Gilpin is best known as a painter of horses but like his friend Philip Reinagle, who possibly owned this sketch, he also produced many paintings of dogs. Gilpin's formal compositions typically depict the dogs in profile but this almost sentimental sketch is probably unrelated to any of his commissioned works.
