William Gostling (1696 - 1777)

RA Collection: People and Organisations

English clergyman and antiquary, known as a historian of Canterbury.

A manuscript account of William Hogarth’s expedition in 1732, by Ebenezer Forrest, (i.e. Hogarth’s Peregrination), was given to Gostling, who turned the narrative into verse. It was printed by John Nichols in 1781; and later inserted in his Anecdotes of Hogarth (1782). It was also reprinted, along with Forrest’s text by William Hone in Volume II of his Table-book (1827-28). It was reprinted, again with Forrest’s version, by John Camden Hotten in 1872.
