William Barclay Squire (1855 - 1927)

RA Collection: People and Organisations

Music Librarian and scholar. A keen musical amateur, Squire joined the British Museum in 1885, taking charge of the music room and its collections; he retired in 1920. He sorted a huge backlog of acquisitions, added many antiquarian publications, and prepared its Catalogue of Printed Music before 1801 (1912). He negotiated the deposit of the royal music collection at the museum and, in retirement, prepared its catalogue.
