Shirley Hughes (b. 1927) is a British author and illustrator. She has written more than fifty books and illustrated two hundred. She studied at the Liverpool School of Art and the Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art in Oxford. After attending Ruskin College she was commissioned by book publisher William Collins, Sons to illustrate and children’s books. She produced work in the picture book format and lithiographic illustrations for works such as Lucy & Toms Day, The Bell Family and Dogger (1977). She has won numerous awards including the Eleanor Farjeon Award, Kate Greenaway medal and an Order of the British Empire.
