Rhys Coren (b. 1983, Plymouth, UK) previously studied at University of the West of England, Bristol. Coren works across a variety of media. For for the Schools Show, he exhibited a series of pictures created using painted marquetry.
These works were inspired by trapped moments, embellished through detail, colour and texture. Frozen frames that try to maintain a real-time rhythm. Every line and space (and negative space) becomes equal; cut, treated and assembled. These are pictures of pleasure, from pleasure, fuelled by music and the written word.
As part of a special closing event, Coren is screening his animated film Once Around the Block, with a soundtrack performed live by musicians Gary Crosby and Moses Boyd. Also, throughout the duration of the show, Coren and artist Paul Flannery from Opening Times will enact a takeover of the Royal Academy website, incorporating work by all final year students.
