Bookseller and publisher, born in Aberdeenshire. For a time he was a partner with the bookseller Paul Vaillant, whose family had conducted a foreign bookselling business in the Strand, London, opposite Southampton Street, since 1686, but from 1768 Elmsley was trading there alone. From 1778 his address was 87 Strand. He was principally involved in importing foreign books. Later in his career he invested in works with others of his trade in London. Despite losing his warehouse to a fire on 2 March 1776 he became one of London’s best-known booksellers.
