Joseph Lubbock (1915 - 2019)

RA Collection: People and Organisations

Joe Lubbock read engineering at Cambridge. He worked on the development of the Spitfire and Wellington Bomber. He served in the Royal Engineers during World War 2. After the war he studied at Heatherly’s and St. Martin’s, before returning to engineering and working on guided missiles and the first computers.

In 1963 he moved to Suffolk to pursue his art. He produced 15 books, the last two of which were printed commercially. In the first 13, the prints were from copper plates. His techniques included etching, deep-etching, aquatint and engraving. The colours were applied by hand. The prints and text were hand bound into books of limited editions, each print being original.

Examples of his books are held in numerous libraries, including the Victoria & Albert Museum, Bodleian Library, British Library, Library of congress and New York Public Library.
