Lieutenant in the Royal Navy of Britain, traveller round the world, travel-writer, known as the “Blind Traveller.” In 1810 he was invalided out of the navy and became totally blind shortly afterwards. Fellow of the Royal Society (1826); Founder-Fellow of the Raleigh Club (afterwards the Royal Geographical Society) (1826).
