Photographer. Born Issac Atkinson, Anderson (1813-1877) studied painting in Paris under the name William Nugent Dunbar, he changed his name once more when he settled in Rome in 1838. After working as an artist for a number of years, he became interested in photography and set up a business in 1853 photographing architecture, landscapes, sculpture and later paintings. He exhibited photographs from 1855-1860 at photographic societies in Glasgow, Edinburgh and London and at the Manchester Art Treasures exhibition of 1857. His son Dominic (1854-1938) continued Fine Art photography which proved very successful, with both Italian and English museums employing their services. Anderson’s grandchildren continued to run the company until the 1960s when the archive was acquired by Alinari.
