Gilles Demarteau or Gilles Demarteau the Elder (1722-1776) was a Flemish etcher, engraver and publisher who was active in Paris. Address from 1755: `A la Cloche’, rue de la Pelterie, Paris.
He played an important part in the development of the `crayon manner’ of engraving. He was one of the key reproductive engravers and publishers of the work of François Boucher.
Uncle of Gilles-Antoine Demarteau (1756-1803).
