Christian soldier in the Roman army, who became a martyr under the persecution of Diocletian. He was tortured and beheaded at Lydda in Palestine or at Nicomedia. The legend of his killing a dragon appears to be no earlier than the 12th century. Patron saint of England, Greece, Palestine and other countries and cities. Commemorated on April 23rd.
