English artist and book illustrator. He is known especially for his illustrations of A.A Milne’s Winnie-the-Pooh, and Kenneth Grahame’s Wind in the Willows.
Shepard studied at the Royal Academy Schools from 1897-1902. While at the RA Schools he met another gifted student, Florence Eleanor Chaplin (1876–1927). In 1904 they married; in 1907 their son Graham Shepard was born and in 1909 their daughter Mary Shepard, who was to marry E. V. Knox (1881-1971) who was editor of Punch from 1932-49. Florence died very suddenly, in 1927. Graham died in 1943
Shepard wrote two autobiographies: Drawn from Memory (1957) and Drawn From Life (1961), (copies of which are held in the Royal Academy Library).
