Edward William Lane (1801-1876) was a British Orientalist, translator and lexicographer. In 1825 he moved to Egypt and in 1836 published an account of what had remained in Ancient Egypt, titled Manners and Customs of the Modern Egyptians. He also translated a version of One Thousand and One Nights, which is notable for having the usual 19th century view on Victorian morality, and published a translation of the Quran.
