Mountaineer, explorer, illustrator, and author best known for the first ascent of the Matterhorn in 1865. Son of the artist and wood engraver Josiah Wood Whymper (1813-1903). Brother of the artist Charles Whymper (1853-1941) and Frederick Whymper (1838-1901). Initially trained to be a wood-engraver.
