East India Company servant. Went to India before 1774. British Resident at Pune, Maharashtra, India, the centre of the Maratha Confederacy, 1785-97. Created baronet 1791. Member of the Council at Bombay and for a time acting President. Returned to Britain 1798, with Susanna, daughter of artist James Wales; whom he married in 1799.
