Busuttil previously studied at the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg before completing her Postgraduate Diploma at the Royal Academy Schools in 2008.
“Thematically, I see my work as an investigation into broad notions of power; how it is gained and held and its effects on individuals and society. I refer to holders of power within my work: politicians, aristocracy, the powerfully rich – as well as people who have been granted authority, such as security guards or military personnel. I use a number of mediums: paint, video, sculpture, installation and performance. However paint remains my primary material, along with a painterly aesthetic. In translating to other mediums, I use masks and costumes as tools of animation and activation.”
