Brian Catling RA was a sculptor who also wrote poetry, made installations and performance pieces. Recently he had been writing novels and making small egg tempera portraits of cyclopses.
Catling was born in London in 1948. He studied at the East London Polytechnic (BA), followed by the Royal College of Art (MA). He was a fellow of Linacre College, Oxford and Professor of Fine Art at the Ruskin School of Drawing & Fine Art, University of Oxford.
Catling was a multi-media artist whose practice has encompassed sculpture, painting, performance, video making and poetry. He began exhibiting his work internationally in 1975.
