“I gazed down upon the Earth one night as if from an orbiting satellite. Rocks were melting into lava and the sea was submerging the land. Resurfacing debris popped up like airbags in a car crash, amassing into clumps surrounded by soda scum. It grew into islands, their centres pitted with volcanic crater lakes – obsidian mirrors that reflected the sky like glassy melancholic eyes.

A lighthouse stood looking outwards from a faltering cliff edge, an octagonal structure made of white washed boards with a glass chamber on top that gave the tower the presence of a giant phial. I peered in through the dusty panes and saw Robert sitting inside at a small table, legs crossed and engrossed in the newspaper.”
