Andrew Birrell (c.1770 - c.1820)

RA Collection: People and Organisations

Engraver and publisher. Born Edinburgh where apprenticed in 1769 (see Maxted). In London by 1785, where remained. Worked for publisher Edward Harding (q.v.) in the 1790s. Birrell’s name is on an allegorical print referring to the La Martinière school in Calcutta, which was established by bequest in 1800 but due to litigation, only opened in 1836. This suggests that he may have been active into the 1830s. [From: British Museum website]
