Voyage d'un iconophile. : Revue des principaux cabinets d'estampes, bibliothèques et musées d'Allemagne, de Hollande et d'Angleterre / par Duchesne aîné.
2 preliminary leaves, x, [2], 419 p.; illus.; 201 mm.
General Note
The printer statement is found on the verso of the half-title page, 'Paris, Imprimerie d'Ad. Moessard, rue de Furstemberg, n.° 8.' This book is bound with blank pages interleaved throughout for the owner's notes.
Provenance
The front pastedown is inscribed in ink, 'W H Carpenter'; there is also a monogram in ink on the verso of the title-page.
Copy Note
There is marginalia in ink and pencil throughout, both on the interleaved pages and the letterpress. Also found loosely placed in the volume is a formal notice of a half-yearly general assembly of the company of proprietors of the West Middlesex Water Works to be held on 4 November 1851; the notice being addressed to Wm Carpenter Esqe. The notice has been folded in half and notes in ink relating to the contents of this book have been written on the verso. It is possible that the owner was William Hookham Carpenter (1792-1866), Keeper of Prints and Drawings at the British Museum (1845-1866), etcher, and collector of Old Master prints, drawings and paintings, and previously a publisher.
Binding Note
The book is fully bound in brown leather with, on the spine, a black leather label lettered in gilt, 'Voyage / D'Un / Iconophile'.
