$a This is a bibliophile's reprint of an account of St Lazarus, preceded by observations and a dedication by L. Cicognara to G. Bossi. The title of the work reproduced is: 'Breve Compendio Della Vita E Morte Di San Lazzaro Monaco Et Insigne Pittore Che sotto Teofilo Imperatore Iconomaco molti tormenti patì per la Pittura, e Culto delle Sagre Immagini Dedicata ... Livio Odescalchi ... In Roma ... 1681' (with dedication by Lazzaro Baldi). The issue addressed in the Vita is one of fundamental importance to the history of art in Europe - whether in Christendom it is permissible to make or venerate images or whether (as in Judaism and Islam) the use of images should be proscribed or severely limited. St. Lazarus was a monk and icon-painter who was persecuted by iconoclasts in the 9th century for upholding the orthodox Christian teaching on the permissibility of making and venerating images of Christ. |
