$a Turner's watercolours for this work were probably commissioned by John Fuller as early as 1810. The work was to have been in two parts, but only the first part was ever published - containing engravings of five views, with an allegoric design on the wrapper, drawn and etched by Turner (the latter not present in the Royal Academy's copy). The plates consist of one map, of the Rape of Hastings, five views (Battle Abbey, Brightling Observatory, the Vale of Ashburnham, Pevensey Bay, the Vale of Heathfield), and five engraved divisional title-plates. The five views are all engraved as 'Proof', and are identified by Rawlinson as in their second state. The in-text illustration is the headpiece to the dedication, showing a coat-of-arms. |
