The 'Memoria' states, 'La presente Opera fu immaginata, disegnata, illustrata, e ... miniata da Anton-Maria Zanetti di Alessandro Viniziano ... Et io Girolamo suo minor fratello che scrivo le presenti brevi notizie ...'

The frontispiece portrait of Zanetti is signed as drawn by Anton: Mariae Zanetti and engraved by Joannes de Plano. Plates 1-24 each carry the name of the source-artist; none is signed by the engraver. The title-plate vignette and the tailpiece and decorative initial of the 'Notizie' are unsigned.

Summary Note

Although the title-plate carries the date of 1760, in this issue the caption of the frontispiece portrait of Zanetti and the 'Memoria' refer to his death in 1778.

The plates show frescoes captioned as painted by Giorgione (pl. 1-4), Titian (pl. 5-7), Tintoretto (pl. 8-14), Zelotti (pl. 15-19) and Veronese (pl. 20-24). The subjects are all human figures, male and female, clothed and unclothed, apart from pl. 20, 21, which show putti.

Provenance

Although first listed in the 1877 printed catalogue of the RA Library, this work may be the 'Various frescoes at Venice' 'that Council ordered to be purchased on 21 April 1841 (see RA Council Minutes, IX, 187).
