$a No publication-date is given on the title-page of this edition, published by Viero. The exhibition catalogue, I Rami Di Visentini Per Le Vedute Di Venezia Del Canaletto (1990) suggests a publication date some time between 1800 and 1820. The work had first been published in 1735 by Pasquali (acting for Consul Smith) (14 pl., with engr. t.pl., 'Prospectus Magni Canalis Venetiarum, addito Certamine Nautico ... Anno MDCCXXXV', and frontis. (port. of Canaletto and Visentini)). In 1742 this set had been retouched and published by Pasquali with two further sets of twelve plates each, a new title-plate and new version of the frontispiece portraits; and in 1751 these had been republished by Pasquali (with three divisional title-plates, each carrying the new date?). Pasquali published the work again in 1754; and Furlanetto published it in 1773. Viero's set (or the Royal Academy's holding of it) includes the divisional title-plate for the first fourteen plates carrying the date of 1742. It reads, 'Prospectus Magni Canalis Venetiarum, addito Certamine Nautico et Nundinis Venetis: Omnia sunt Expressa ex Tabulis XIV. Pictis ab Antonio Canale, in Aedibus Josephi Smith Angli, Delineante atque Incidente, Antonio Visentini, Elegantius recusi, Anno MDCCXLII.' All three groups of plates carry captions in Latin, and show views of Venice. The frontispiece carries two portraits, of Canaletto and Visentini. The new title-page vignette shows Aurora rising over Venice. Many of the Canaletto paintings are preserved in the Royal Collection at Windsor Castle. |
