$a No publication-date is carried by the title-page; but five plates carry the date of 1818 June (pl. [1, 2, 8, 12, 13]); seven carry no date (pl. [3, 4, 7, 9, 10, 11, 14]); twelve carry the date of 1818 July 10 (pl. [5, 6, 15-24]). The plates are all captioned. Twelve show views of Rome and its neighbourhood (pl. [1-4, 6, 9, 12, 15, 17, 21, 23, 24]), and twelve show the bay of Naples (pl. [5, 7, 8, 10, 11, 13, 14, 16, 18-20, 22]). Hullmandel had been introduced to the technique of lithography in 1817 by Alois Senefelder during a visit to Munich. This publication is described by Twyman as marking a turning-point in the history of lithography in Britain. Hullmandel was dissatisfied with the printing of these Twenty-Four Views, and subsequently set up his own lithographic press, made many experiments with lithographic techniques and published several influential books on the subject. |
