$a The author is not named on the title page; but the dedication is by Gautier. The dedication carries the date of 1714. This treatise has been praised as an example of eighteenth-century ability to match innovative technical writing with illustrations which elucidate 'in the full, light-relaying sense of the word' (J. Sweetman, The artist and the bridge). The work became the standard text on its subject for over half a century. The first treatment in English did not appear until 1772, with C. Hutton's The principles of bridges. |
