Summary Note
The work had first been published in 1587 (and the 1587 imprimatur is reprinted on the verso of the title page of the present edition). The author is not named on the title page, but the preface is signed 'R. V.' (for 'Richardus Versteganus').
The text and illustrations describe persecutions and atrocities committed by Christians of the Reformed Church against those of the Roman Catholic Church, in Britain, France and Belgium. The last print shows the execution of Mary, Queen of Scots.
The engraved title is printed above the letterpress imprint.
Provenance
The verso of the front free endpaper is inscribed in pencil, 'S. A. H.', i.e. S.A. Hart RA, Librarian of the Royal Academy 1864-81. Purchased for RA Library in 1878 (see RA Annual Report for 1878, p. 48). The front pastedown is inscribed illegibly in pencil.

18th-century [?] calf, upper and lower covers gilt-stamped with armorial device within chain, centre; rebacked in 19th century, spine lettered 'R. Verstegan Theatrum Crudelitatum Hæreticorum 1592' and 'R.A.'
