$a No publication date is printed on the title page, but one plate ([113]) carries the publisher's imprint of Baldwin and Cradock with the date 1837. Most plates are reprints including their earlier signatures and dates of publication. Hogarth's engravings made him well-known throughout Europe in the eighteenth century - in Germany G.C. Lichtenberg published an influential series of commentaries on them between 1784 and 1796 - and throughout the nineteenth century they were continually reprinted. |
