The work was "Published by order of the Secretary of State for India in Council" in two volumes; the first volume dealt with pictorial subjects and the second with decorative details.
The first volume comprises a Preface by Griffiths, Contents, List of page plates Vol. I, List of text illustrations, text (p. 1-40) followed by plates 1-91.
The second volume comprises Contents, text (p. 41-44), Appendix (p. 45-46), List of page plates Vol. II, List of text illustrations, followed by plates 92-159.
Binding Note
The volumes are bound in green cloth with gilt decoration on front boards and the spines. The spines are labelled in gilt lettering, 'The Paintings In The Buddhist Cave Temples of Ajantâ', 'Griffiths', 'Vol. I. [Vol. II.]', 'Griggs' and '1896'. [Note that both volumes have 1896 on the spine although vol. II was published in 1897.]
