$a The publication-date of 1848 is carried by the title-page; but most plates carry earlier dates - of 1843, 1844, 1845, 1847. Warrington was one of the first British stained-glass artists working in the Gothic Revival style. From 1837 to 1841 he worked with A.W.N. Pugin. Most of his text is a history of stained glass in Britain and elsewhere in Europe from the eleventh to the fifteenth century, with a shorter section on its history from the sixteenth to the nineteenth century. Unusually Warrington chooses to illustrates the succession of styles mainly with modern examples by himself or others - a method which attracted much adverse criticism.
