General Note
James Neale, as an architectural student (from 1873 at the Royal Academy), began making measured drawings of the abbey church of St Alban early in the 1870s and was awarded in 1875 the Pugin Travelling Studentship and the Silver Medal of the Royal Institute of British Architects. The drawings were so successful that he was encouraged to have them printed by subscription. As a result, at the head of the Preface is the statement, "Printed for subscribers, and not published".
The title-page, which is called the Frontispiece in the text, is noted as Plate 1 in the list of plates. It is a copy of decoration on the Choir ceiling and is reproducted from Neale's drawing by chromolithography. In the Notes on page 36 Neale describes the selection of photolithography for the production of the plates and its advantages for this work. At the foot of the same page is the printer statement: C. F. Kell, Castle Street, Holborn, E.C.
Binding Note
The work has a cover title printed in gold, 'Neale's Abbey Church of S. Alban'. The brown leather spine is lettered in gold, 'James Neale. Abbey Church Of St. Alban. London, 1877.' and 'R.A.'
