$a This publication is a supplement to T.W. Greig's Ladies' old-fashioned shoes (1885); the plates, though unnumbered and unlettered, are referenced on preceding text pages as pl. XII - XVII in continuation of the numbering in the earlier collection. Plates [XII-XV] are unsigned two- or four-colour chromolithographs; pl. [XVI] and [XVII] are photo-litho reproductions of engravings from Balduinus and Nigronus' De calceo antquo et ... de caliga veterum (Amsterdam: Andreæ Frisl, 1667). The 10-page appendix at the end reprints the entry on the history of shoes from The London encyclopædia, ed. Thomas Curtis (London: T. Tegg, 1829).
