From the seventeenth century Correggio was much admired by artists and critics. He influenced painters as different as Watteau and Sir Joshua Reynolds (see Reynolds [Royal Academy exhibition catalogue], 1985-6, no.42); and Mengs wrote an admiring biography. His reputation has remained high, despite some disparagement from writers such as Ruskin and Berenson.
