Provenance

The book was presented to the Royal Academy by the editor. Pasted on the verso of the front endpaper is a letter dated August 7th, 1877, from Maxwell to S. R. Hart R.A., the Librarian, enclosed with The entry of the Emperor Charles V. into the city of Bologna on the fifth of November MDXXIX [see 12/3816] stating he had hoped to have also included this work [Solyman The Magnificent ...] at the same time, but it was still with the binders. However, on the Presentation Page (p.[ii], the verso of the half-title) the work is inscribed within a decorative border by the editor, 'Presented / to The Library of the Royal Academy / by the Editor / William Stirling Maxwell. / Keir. Octr. 18th 1877.'

Copy Note

At the foot of the Preface [p. v] the editor states that "The impression of this work consists of only one hundred copies".
