$a The plates are captioned within the plate and are described briefly in the List Of Drawings. They are two-tint lithographs, showing exterior and interior views of churches and public buildings in Liege, Lierre, Oudenarde, Dixmude, Antwerp, Louvain, Treves, Bruges, Ratisbone, Munich, Ipres, Tournay, Hal, Courtray, Gaesbeck and Mons, in late-Gothic or Northern Renaissance styles. They are peopled with figures dressed in 17th-century costume. This was the second collection of Haghe's sketches in Belgium and Germany (the two others were published in 1840 and 1850 respectively). According to the publisher's advertisement (bound into the Royal Academy's copy), this and similar works were available either as 'Imperial Folio, tinted and half bound Morocco Price £4 4s 0d' or as 'Coloured and mounted, exactly like the Original Sketches in Portfolio £10 10s 0d.' The work was bound using india-rubber or caoutchouc in a process invented by George Hancock; which has become brittle with time. |
