Responsibility Note

The engraved title-plate and nineteen illustrations are signed as designed by 'Matthæus Rossell:' (one illus. as drawn by him); six illustrations are signed as designed by Arsenius Mascagnius; four, as designed by Antonius Tempestinus (once, Tempesta); two, as designed by Antonius Pomarangius; one each as designed by Fabritius Boschius or Ioannes Bilivert. Seven are unsigned.

Summary Note

The publication-date of '16[--]' is given on the title-plate - the last two numbers seeming to have been erased. The dedication to Cristiana Di Loreno Gran Duchessa di Toscana points to a date before 1637, the year in which the Grand Duchess died. The Warburg library catalogues an edition of this work published at Florence 'Appresso Pietro Cecconcelli' and dated '1619', which it describes as '1st edition. cf. Hoe 2086'.

Provenance

The verso of the front free endpaper is inscribed in pencil, 'S. A. H.', i.e. S. A. Hart RA, Librarian of the Royal Academy 1864-81. Purchased for RA Library in 1878 (see RA Annual Report for 1878, p. 49).

Binding Note

19th-century calf, upper and lower covers having blind-stamped borders; rebacked ca. 1990, retaining earlier spine-piece lettered 'Firenze 16 ...' and 'R.A.', black morocco spine-label lettered 'Miracoli Della Nunziata'.
