$a The publication-date of 1814 is carried on the title page, but the dedication carries the date of 1825. The work was possibly issued serially in thirteen parts, corresponding to the thirteen 'Dispense' of the text. The 'Dispense' ('Prima' - 'Decimaterza'), each describe twelve plates. The frontispiece shows a general view of the Campo Santo, Pisa. The other plates show sarcophagi, urns and other sculpture - some of the classical, others of the Christian periods. In plate 126 a classical statue of Hercules is juxtaposed with a Christian statue of the Mother and Child. |
