Summary Note
Earlier publication-dates are carried by some plates - 1747 (pl. 49, 72), 1751 (frontispiece), 1759 (pl. 98).
Hugford's biography of Gabbiani remains a major source of information on this painter. Hugford, himself a painter and teacher (both Bartolozzi and Cipriani were among his pupils), was equally well known as a collector and dealer. Several of the drawings which he acquired passed to British collectors such as Horace Mann and Horace Walpole.
Many plates imitate the manner of a wash by using a controlled lavis technique invented by J.A. Schweikart.
