Summary Note

This tribute to Edward Armitage, R.A., was published in the year after his death, 'Under The Authority Of' his widow, Mrs Laurie Armitage, who herself died in 1898.

The 'Introduction' describes this as a representative selection of the works of a historical painter, who had a special predilection for Biblical themes but whose earliest subjects were secular.

The plates are describes in detail in the 'List Of Illustrations'. The first shows a portrait of Edward Armitage from a photograph by Elliott and Fry; the rest show paintings and drawings by him, in chronologic order (the 'List Of Illustrations' gives the dates of execution of most of these). Plate 25 shows 'Esther's banquet' (1865) - the subject of Armitage's diploma work for the Royal Academy.
